A 1998 study by the Insurance Corp. of British Columbia and Canadian National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control concludes that back plates with retroreflective borders may result in a 15% reduction in all crashes at urban, signalized intersections. Retroreflective borders are also advantageous during power outages when signals are dark. The Lighthawk Series are made from Alpolic 350, a lightweight aluminum composite material, and 3M’s diamond grade cubed (DG3) reflective sheeting. Furnished with a variety of reflective patterns, grades, and widths, the back plates can be fabricated to fit any signal head assembly and any specification. Lighter than plastic or aluminum ( 2mm thick at .57 lbs./sq. ft.), the product resists fading, cracking, and peeling over its 12-year service llife.
