The Lake Gaston Water Treatment Plant—winner of an Honor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Virginia—is the first submerged membrane plant in the state.
Richmond, Va.-based engineering firm CH2M Hill offered design and construction management services to the city of Chesapeake, Va.; the company conducted a pilot and concept study, which showed that ultrafiltration membrane treatment provided significant advantages over conventional or microfiltration technology. The result: a plant that currently produces 8 mgd of high-quality drinking water, and can be expanded to treat 20 mgd as needed. The $28.5 million project was completed in 29 months, ahead of the city's schedule.
