Polishing a slab before something’s built on it is a luxury, right? Not if the jobsite doesn’t have electricity or water and is more than an hour from the nearest concrete plant over unpaved roads. Now imagine cutting that canvas into 0.8-meter squares separated by lines 3 millimeters wide and 4 millimeters deep.
Mike and Lexi Polin wanted their new home’s floor to look like polished concrete tiles. Subcontractor Diagrind had been asked to make cuts before, but never in such a pattern or for a home. How this family business — DIA for founder David Ian Ausburn and GRIND for specializing in diamond grinding — overcame logistical and technical challenges earned our 2017 Polished Concrete Award in the residential projects/new construction category.
