On April 8, 2010, former City of Rock Hill, Missouri, Police Officer Mathew Crosby was shot when responding to a domestic violence dispute. The incident left him paralyzed from the waist down. Since then, he's lived in rental homes ill-equipped for the surgeries, setbacks, and struggles he's endured post-injury.

The St. Louis community took charge by forming the "Crosby Crew," local residents who are dedicated to ensuring Crosby has a fully accessible "smart home" for him and his two sons. Peri Formwork Systems Inc. of Chicago, and national construction firm McCarthy Building Companies Inc. stepped in to support building a new home. McCarthy will donate the foundation's labor and concrete; Peri will provide the formwork. St. Louis-based Schaub & Srote Architects is designing the home.
